Theranos Memorabilia Collector Guide
Theranos dissolved in 2018, and its logo now lives on in the resale market. Here is the documented history and a practical checklist for judging a listing.
What was Theranos?
Theranos was a Silicon Valley blood-testing company that Elizabeth Holmes founded in 2003 and led as chief executive until 2018. Its stated goal was technology that could run blood tests on small samples drawn from a fingerstick, rather than the needle draw from a vein that traditional testing requires.
The company’s pitch centered on its own miniaturized analyzers, known by names including the TSPU, Edison and minilab, and on proprietary nanotainers for collecting fingerstick blood samples. Theranos partnered with Walgreens in 2010 and publicly launched its testing services in Walgreens stores in the fall of 2013. NPR reported that the company raised more than $700 million from investors and was valued at $9 billion at its peak.
How the company collapsed
According to the appeals court that later reviewed the criminal case, the Edison was the only Theranos-developed device ever used to test patient samples, and only twelve assays were ever run on it. Other tests ran on machines made by third parties, some of them modified by Theranos. After an unannounced inspection in late 2015, the federal agency that oversees blood-testing laboratories found deficiencies that it said presented “immediate jeopardy” to patient health.
On March 14, 2018, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Theranos, Holmes and former president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani with raising more than $700 million through an elaborate, years-long fraud. The SEC said the company’s own analyzer could complete only a small number of tests, that its technology was never deployed by the Department of Defense despite claims of battlefield use in Afghanistan, and that 2014 revenue from operations was a little more than $100,000 rather than the more than $100 million it had claimed.
Theranos and Holmes settled without admitting or denying the allegations. Holmes agreed to a $500,000 penalty, a 10-year bar from serving as a public-company officer or director, the return of 18.9 million shares and the surrender of her voting control. In a shareholder letter reported in September 2018, chief executive David Taylor said Theranos would dissolve after trying to pay creditors with its remaining cash, and that there would be no distributions to shareholders.
The criminal case and its outcome
A grand jury indicted Holmes and Balwani on June 14, 2018, and the two were tried separately. On January 3, 2022, a jury convicted Holmes of one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of fraud against individual investors. It acquitted her of the patient-related conspiracy count and three counts of fraud against individual patients, and deadlocked on three other investor counts.
In a separate trial in 2022, a jury convicted Balwani on all twelve counts, covering fraud against both investors and patients. U.S. District Judge Edward Davila sentenced Holmes on November 18, 2022 to 135 months in federal prison and sentenced Balwani on December 7, 2022 to 155 months, each followed by three years of supervision. The court also ordered the two to pay $452 million in restitution, including amounts owed to Walgreens and Safeway.
On February 24, 2025, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed both convictions, both sentences and the restitution order. Judge Davila later reduced Holmes’s sentence to 10 years and 3 months, and ABC News reported in September 2026 that her release was scheduled for February 22, 2030.
Why Theranos items became collectible
A Theranos fleece or water bottle is an ordinary promotional object. Its interest comes from the story attached to it: a startup that captivated investors, a fraud prosecution and a dissolution. After the January 2022 verdict, Print & Promo Marketing reported that sellers were flocking to resale sites such as eBay with Theranos-branded items.
Because the company dissolved, nothing new can be company-issued. Any item made with the Theranos name since then came from someone else, so the line between original company material and later merchandise matters more here than for a brand that still operates.
What collectors find
Print & Promo Marketing’s January 2022 review of eBay listings gives a documented snapshot of what surfaces under the Theranos name, in groups that are not equally close to the company.
- Apparel: fleece pullovers, half-zips and jackets offered as pre-owned Theranos items
- Drinkware and paper: Theranos-branded water bottles and an Elizabeth Holmes business card
- Partner material: Walgreens marketing material, from the chain that offered Theranos testing in its stores
- Publications: magazines with Holmes on the cover, including Time and Inc., which document the publicity rather than the company’s own output
- Newly made goods: basic Theranos logo T-shirts and coffee mugs that the publication said were created to meet post-verdict demand
What about Edison and minilab hardware?
We have not found a documented public sale of a Theranos Edison or minilab analyzer. The appeals court described the minilab as still in development while Holmes ran the company, and the SEC said the vast majority of patient tests ran on commercial analyzers made by other manufacturers.
So a laboratory instrument described as Theranos equipment may be a third-party machine that was used at Theranos rather than a Theranos design. Ask for the manufacturer plate, model and serial number before relying on the description.
What to check before buying
A famous name does not establish where an object came from. Judge each listing on what it shows and documents.
- Origin: separate company-issued items from later logo shirts, mugs, parody pieces and film or television tie-ins, which belong to the story’s afterlife rather than to Theranos
- Labels: ask for close photographs of the maker’s label, size and care tags and the logo itself
- Provenance: a former employee’s account, an event name or a year adds context, but an unsupported story is a claim, not proof
- Lab items: treat any used instrument or blood-collection tube as possibly contaminated
- Condition: look for stains, fading, pilling, missing zipper pulls, creases and water damage, and ask for measurements
- Returns: prefer a seller whose return policy suits an item that is hard to judge from photographs
How much is Theranos memorabilia worth?
There is no fixed price, and asking prices are not sales. In its January 2022 review, Print & Promo Marketing found that most listings with very high asking prices had no bids. Items that did find buyers in completed listings included a Theranos-branded water bottle at $30 plus $9.99 shipping, an Elizabeth Holmes business card and a fleece pullover that sold for an undisclosed best offer. Compare sold listings when the marketplace shows them, and weigh condition and documentation over the headline.
Where to find Theranos items now
There is no Theranos store to revisit. The Theranos company page on I ♥ Capitalism collects live, relevance-checked resale listings and links each one to the marketplace where it is offered; the seller there handles questions, payment and returns. Inventory changes as sellers add or remove items, so apply the checklist above to each one and keep any documentation that comes with a purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Is Theranos still in business?
No. In a shareholder letter reported in September 2018, Theranos said it would dissolve after trying to pay its creditors with its remaining cash, with no distributions to shareholders.
What happened to Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani?
Holmes was convicted on four investor-related counts in January 2022 and sentenced to 135 months. Balwani was convicted on all twelve counts in a separate trial and sentenced to 155 months. The Ninth Circuit affirmed both convictions in February 2025, and Judge Davila later reduced Holmes’s sentence to 10 years and 3 months.
Can I buy a Theranos Edison or minilab?
We have not found a documented public sale of either analyzer. Treat a listing that claims one with caution and ask for the manufacturer plate, model number and provenance, because, according to the SEC, Theranos ran most patient tests on commercial analyzers made by other companies.
Where can I see current Theranos listings?
The Theranos company page on I ♥ Capitalism maintains a live resale feed and links each item to the marketplace where it is offered.
