This bust takes its inspiration from the last known photograph of Abraham Lincoln, which was taken by Alexander Gardner in 1865. The end of the Civil War was imminent as Lee had surrendered, but the strain on the President is evident in the portrait. The original sculptor, Leo Cherne, made a thorough study of Lincoln's face.
