The ''Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World'' was given to the people of the United States by the people of France in recognition of a friendship established during the American Revolution. Designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue is constructed of thin sheets of copper, no thicker than two pennies placed together, over a massive iron pylon and skeletal framework which was engineered by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.
