Kennesaw was the “one last mountain” between General William T. Sherman and Atlanta, Georgia. When Union troops arrived in Marietta, the “Gibraltar of Georgia” towered 1,800 feet and sat only 25 miles west of Sherman’s final destination. Soon, the Union launched a frontal assault on the seven-mile-long Confederate line stationed at Little Kennesaw Mountain, Pigeon Hill, and Cheatham Hill.
