The Confederate Army occupied Fort Barrancas in March of 1861, which created a tense stalemate in the Pensacola Bay, as Federal forces occupied neighboring Fort Pickens. In November of 1861, Fort Barrancas suffered heavy damages in a massive bombardment with Federal Marines and was ultimately abandoned in May of 1862.
